Weird Mirror Review

Weird Mirror by Human Adult Band is an ever appreciating collection of live tape recordings on Nostorca Tapes, mostly of heat of the moment jams it seems, nicely balanced, alive and pulsing despite the primordial recording technique ; collected and wrapped up by "the Darvis" in a wonderful looking and smelling package. Seriously it smells great, like the incense burned out after the mystical musical session has ended... as a long time fan of the band, I feel some tracks sound reminiscent of echos of songs prior in the years but mostly the sounds pummeling my ears are fresh from the vine sketches or small tornadoes of sound. The first track starts us out with a worming guitar improvisation , tunneling through the dust , under a distant jamming Human Adult Band in the throws of it ; I'm not sure if it was recorded seperate from the actual jam, but it sounds more like the tape recorder was placed next to the  guitar amp,  gives a feel of detachment, sort of an out of body experience happening. It's a nice introductory experience of the haze the listener is about to embark into. A brief interlude of grumblings roll through the sonic tundra and rounding the bend we come to the "birthing blues" moment of the tape, where the profound wailings of Justin Mank overtake an amorphous alien jam which seems to fluxuate like a choppy sea around a tortured soul. A droney crushing bass solo eventually distorts into an epic abstraction & one could compare to a sort of crushed Gregorian Chant, with tree branches of re-interpretations eventually folding on themselves. Then we get the only true song sounding jam on the tape - with the singer feeding their voice through a noise pedal? Or noise being used as a cadence of melody - it gets really Faulkner at this juncture, hearing beyond what immediately sounds like more slowing down of sludge jazz - Lastly, the epic 20 minute or so jam is a tour from the bowels of a swampy jam, into a conflict , resolving rhythmically into a meadow's peace. Its very sonically poetic, all of it... My experience as friends of the "Adults" has lead me to hear out most of their albums and this one marks a much more artful and improvised side, though they have always been trying to pull the listener into an experience - Its like a dear friend pulling out their guts, pickling them in jars and handing off to you, without much time to ferment or loose freshness. I highly enjoy listening and hearing new things each time I am able to get lost in it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
